Day 122 - Studs Spring Style

After a super busy day at the salon I wanted to go with something really easy for tonight's post. I have seen tons of studded nails lately, usually done in darker tones with an edgier look which I really love but I decided that I wanted to do it with cute Spring colors instead. I like the look of these nails, to me they are the perfect combo of Easter and 80's pop. I must also say I am really enjoying the multicolored polish, it's a first for me and I think it's awesome!

Day 121 - Distressed Denim

When I got my nail studs I thought the gold ones looked a lot like the studs on jeans which gave me the inspiration for today's the denim french.

This design is actually really easy. I started by painting the nails french with a dark blue polish, once that was dry I used my finger to apply the lighter polish on top. I found my fingerprint made a better jean texture than using a sponge so I just dropped a little polish on to a paper plate and pressed my finger into it and then rolled it over the nails. The odd area that went a little too light I had to go over a second time using the base color instead. For the rips in the jeans I used an acrylic paint close to my skin tone and painted random patches on the nails. With white paint I used a small paint brush to add some texture around the hole and painted individual strings going across with a striping brush. To finish off the design I used a gold paint to add the stitching along the french line and added the gold stud to the corner of each nail. To be honest I'm not even sure if I like these nails but I did accomplish what I was going for so that makes me happy.

Day 120 - Afternoon Tea

My girlfriend brought me back all sorts of nail goodies from Hong Kong and included in the pack were some mini 3D sweets, The minute I saw them it made me want to go for afternoon tea and desserts.

I wanted to go with a Victorian floral french for this design, I started of with the pastel polish and then painted the roses. I had seen this tutorial a while ago and it is by far the easiest way to paint a rose (Tutorial Link) what I did was paint  two red dots with the dotting tool placed side by side. I then  painted two light pink dots on either side  of the red ones in the shape of a +, while the dots are still wet use your smallest dotting tool and swirl the paints to form the petals. Do watch the video, it makes much more sense! after that I added the leaves and outlined all the roses. When that was all done I used my silver striping paint and added the line under the french (like the trim on china) and then to make it even more girly I added some pearls. For the ring finger I painted the french polish and added the tiny sweets by adhering them with a small drop of nail glue, you would be shocked how well these things stay on! They do drive me nuts but I still think it's worth it.

Day 119 - Chanel

Ever since I painted the Chanel stitch french a few weeks back I have wanted to do this design. Just today I got the chains that I needed, so I of course could not wait.

My idea was to paint on three of the nails the texture of the purse, it was really hard to find the right color combo where it still looked black but you could also see the stitch lines. I decided to go with  a dark charcoal because none of my blacks were working. After the print was done, I added the chains to match the strap of the purses. On the ring finger I painted the logo, this was pretty easy just painted it using a white striping paint. The thumb I got to have a little fun, I made a white flower with my acrylic mold which I thought looked a lot like the flower embellishments you see on some of the accessories, to give it more of a Chanel look I added in some black detail. To finish off the design I alternated pearls and metal studs coming off the flower.

Day 118 - Hibiscus Holiday

For the last month I have just been swamped with manicures and pedicures for clients going on vacation, most of them going to Hawaii. At this point I am unable to go on a fabulous vacation like the ones I have been hearing about so I decided the least I could do was paint some vacation nails to make me feel better! I now have my own little piece of Hawaii on my finger tips.

Hibiscus flowers are really easy to do and they look a lot more complex than a basic flower when the really are not. What you want to do is start off with a completely polished nail, I went with a teal french with a coat of clear on top. Wait until the polish is almost dry to paint your flowers, this is the most important step! With a dotting tool I painted two flowers on each nail, once the nail art was dry I used the pointy side of my cuticle pusher (but anything pointy would work) and I removed some of the color out of the middle of each nail giving it the hibiscus look. after the flowers were complete I painted a couple curly lines and finished off with some top coat.

Day 117 - Cherry Blossoms

Today I was out and about running errands and I noticed that the lovely cherry blossoms that line our streets have started to bloom. In my neighborhood we have them for several blocks and they just look so pretty mid spring when the trees are filled with flowers. Right now they are very sparse but still add some color to the neighborhood, especially on a cloudy day like today.

Usually when I paint cherry blossoms I start with a regular 5 petal daisy with the clean lines. For today's design I wanted a more abstract flower, rather than using my dotting tool I painted the light pink petals using my pink pastel Instant Artist paint. I then painted the inside of the petals with the rose paint and added the black details. The next step I tried something different, I painted a coat of Seche Vite over the nails, this top coat applies thicker and dries really fast. Once the top coat was dry I went over the tips of the petals with the pastel pink paint, this gave some depth to the flowers so they almost appear 3d. I'm not sure how well it will show up in the picture but on the nails it actually looks really cool!

Day 116 - Tinkerbell

Tinkerbell is my absolute favorite Disney character so this design was definitely on my to do list. I had no idea what I was going to do when I started, I just decided to paint her face on the one finger and it went from there.

The design was painted using a variety of my Instant Artist paints, Acrylic craft paint and other random nail art paints. I painted Tinkerbell by painting all the basic shapes of her face and body with the beige paint, once I had an idea where everything should be I added the details and filled in the rest. The wings were painted using a white striping paint and China Glaze Snow Globe. Finally to add some fairy sparkle I added the crystals. These nails make me really happy, I will probably wake up tomorrow with a sore hand from posing it in that specific position for so long but it will be worth it because I love these nails!!

Day 115 - Spring Has Sprung

I found this adorable floral fabric swatch and had to give it a try on my nails. I picked up a polish last week that was perfect for this design! It's one from the Capital Collection for The Hunger Games and It's actually quite pretty for a polish that typically is not my style. It's a creamy brownish mauve color with a high gloss, I was pleasantly surprised that it looked good against my skin tone.

The fabric (pictured below) has more brown tones in it, I wanted to go with some soft pastel tones to make it a little more fun! Using my nail art paints I painted the flowers alternating between the four colors. With the glossy polish and patent leather top coat this design was really hard to photograph without a glare, but in person I think it looks pretty good! slightly like old lady wallpaper but still very pretty.

Day 114 - Pretty Pink Flowers

Today I was in the mood for a really girly pastel with a pretty design, I liked yesterday's nail art but today I am sticking with Spring! I picked up this awesome creamy lilac color from the Electropop collection and it has been sitting in my kit unused for way too long. I love this polish! It's one of those colors that look great on any skin tone, even people as pasty white as me!

I went with a very soft design on this one, I wanted the nail art to have simple details but still have lots going on. I started by painting the basic daisy flower in the corner of each nail using a dotting tool. I wanted to use pink crystals so to have some contrast between the petals and the stone I painted little white flicks coming from the center of the flower, with the same white striping paint I painted the curved lines coming from the flowers. To add a little more pink, I decided to add the little dots using a toothpick. I think this design is very sweet and girly, I like it!

Day 113 - Hunger Games

With the midnight release of the movie tonight, I wanted to paint this design. I will start off by saying I honestly have not read the books nor do I have any intention to go to the movie, but because everyone else seems to be so hyped about, I had to do it.

I always find it very challenging  to paint anything that has a huge following, The die hard fans now every little detail and you don't want to let them down. What I decided to do (and please let me know if I did anything wrong) was start off with the book cover, I painted the circular designs using a silver Instant Artist paint and I painted the logo for the first book on the ring finger with a few different shades of yellow and gold. To finish off the book part of the design I painted in the title attempting at painting it with the same font, I'm just glad it all fit! I saw the trailer for the movie and it had flames around the logo so I decided to paint some in along the tip of the nail. Finally I painted the number 12 on the ring finger because it bugged me that there was only white on the thumb. The polish is one from the Hunger Games collection, It's a gorgeous Charcoal matte color that reminds me of granite, It actually made me sad to top coat it because the color is so awesome on its own, but I had to in order to make the nail art look good. Overall I am super happy with these and I really hope the fans out there will approve!

Day 112 - Aries

Day 112, yay!! I am officially 1/3 the way through my blog project! Today's design is Aries, I always get excited when we enter another zodiac sign. I have so much fun doing these and I was especially excited to paint a fire sign because I had picked this awesome color from the Hunger Games collection

I have chosen to paint all the nails in the zodiac collection the same and I really enjoy the challenge of making each design unique. Aries is a fire sign so I painted the lettering in orange and the symbol in gold. I painted the ram which is the character for this sign in matching tones, all of the nail art paint was Instant Artist. I'm really happy with how these turned out, I think it's my favorite of the collection so far!

Day 111 - Spring Bling

Happy fist day of Spring everyone!!! I am so happy that it is finally here and we actually had a beautiful spring day today. For the start of the season I wanted to kick it off with really pretty nail art.
For these nails I started with one coat of glitter nail polish, to create the pastel pink glitter fade I used some loose glitter and pressed it into the tips slightly fading down. I then applied a coat of Seche Vite top coat so that I had a smooth surface to paint the silver swirls coming off the corner of the nails. For the bling I used these adorable flowers that my girlfriend had brought me from Hong Kong, to coordinate the colors I used a matching blue swarovski crystals in the corner of the other three fingers. Just because there waasn't enough sparkle between the glitter and blue stones, I decided to add little clear crystal at the end of each swirl

Day 110- Under The Sea

To be completely honest I was in no mood to paint my nails today, I have two acrylics that have snapped off and they are just looking hideous! luckily I popped in my memory card and found this picture of a clients nails that I have not posted.

This one was painted using mostly Acrylic Craft paint the only nail art paint I used was the opal two sided nail art pen by Nubar for the seaweed and bubbles. I think this design is pretty cute, It kinda makes me want to go snorkeling.

Day 109 - Ninja Turtles

While I was thinking about tonight's post I was looking at the pile of green nail polish that I had bought for St. Patrick's Day and it came to me, The four colors I had sitting there looked like the different skin tones of the ninja turtles, so I decided to go with it. As a child Ninja Turtles were my favorite. I was always Raphael when we fought the neighborhood boys, I had the red mask and a pair plastic sai I thought I was pretty awesome!

Usually I hate repeating colors a couple days in a row but the green I used as a base is very different from what I had been using previous days, This color was one of my fav's last summer and it was perfect for my TMNT design. It really shows off the different shades of the turtles. To paint the turtles I started with the four nail polishes painting the shape of their heads, then using instant artist paints I painted the masks in their appropriate colors. to finish the turtles off I outlined them and painted in the eyes. I was stuck on the thumb so I decided to just paint TMNT in the new font, I wanted to paint the original logo that I grew up with but to be honest this seemed so much easier! I am really happy with the nails and I think they would have made the 8 year old version of me very proud!

Day 108 - Luck Of The Irish

Happy St Patty's Day Everyone! I hope some of you are going out tonight, that way  I can live Vicariously through you, I plan to just chill at home tonight and watch a little hockey.

This design is definitely my favorite from the bunch, I love the combo of hand painted fun and the clover embellishments that are mixed in there, I think it gives the design a little more dimension than the usual hand painted design. I really enjoyed painting this, I was able to use lots of fun colors (all instant artist as usual) And I think they turned out great against the green background, especially the complimentary colors of the rainbow and beard of the leprechaun they really pop. I painted this in the opposite order that I usually do, I started with black outline and filled in the colors after, this allowed me to keep the lines a little thinner. I could not be happier with this, and I am just so pleased the rainbow actually lined up!

Day 107 - Kiss Me I'm Irish

Here is another one for St Patrick's day, for today's design I went with the whole Kiss me I'm Irish theme. You see so many people wearing the shirts and silly hats with this all over it, I had to do it. I'm sure only a small amount are actually Irish but I love it! Any holiday or event where people come together dress up and act crazy I'm in! I'm not going out to party but I will definitely be rockin some green and gold come Saturday.

I painted the nails in this bright green polish which usually looks really cute on tanned skin but for this design and against my pale skin it looked a tad bit too yellow so I decided to press dark green glitter over the tips. I painted the pictures using my Instant Artist paints, painting the colors first and then outlining them with black.

Day 106 - Four Leaf Clovers

With just a few days left I have already done all sorts of St Patty's day designs. I will be posting them over the next few days. This one is really basic but I like it, the design is still fun without being overly busy.

I painted the nails in a black polish, once that was dry I painted a heavy coat of gold crackle up the left side of each nai, I then used a black then gold glitter striping paint to piaint a line along the crackle edge. For the clovers I struggled a bit, the color comes off when you you apply top coat . So what I had to do was apply the top coat and then press them in while it was still wet

Day 105- In A Galaxy Far Far Away

I have seen a bunch of Galaxy nails pop up on different sites over the last few months. I first saw it on YouTube, it was a cutepolish tutorial that was very well done and I have wanted to give it a try since (click tutorial if you want to see it). Me and my husband have also been super obsessed with NASA and UFO documentaries for the last little while, every time we watch one it reminds me that I have been putting it off. So here is my galaxy design...

This design is very easy but it is also a huge pain in the butt. You need lots of colors and even more patience. The great part is you cannot mess it up, if something does not look right you just layer another color on top. I started with a glittery dark blue polish on the nail, I then used a makeup sponge with the sharp edge torn off to sponge in the basic shapes using a silver polish. Then you just start layering the colors, I found the metallic colors looked the best and were the easiest to sponge on, after I had all the colors down I went over the highlight areas with the silver glitter (Tinsel) to add some extra sparkle to the design.  With the galaxy mostly done I added the finishing touches, I used my Grape instant artist to add some detail along the spiral and used Crisp White paint to add the globular clusters of stars. I love these nails I think they turned out great! Thanks Cutepolish for the inspiration!!

Day 104 - Silver Lining

I've been in a bit of a slump lately and I am 100% blaming it on the weather, for those of you not located in the Vancouver area you are not missing out with the crazy weather we have had. It's been cold, rainy, with wind storms and even snow in some areas, I am just sooo ready for sun!! But the silver lining is what inspired me to do this design, Spring is only one week away and with the time change we have gained a whole hour of daylight, this always makes me feel so much better! There is nothing better than coming home from work and it is still light out, I just feel so much more motivated!

This design is really easy, all I did was paint the shape of the clouds with a hot blue Instant Artist paint after that was dry I copied the line of the dark blue cloud with my light blue polish CG kinetic candy creating another cloud inside the first one. To make the clouds stand out I outlined them with the platinum striping paint, I then painted in the bright yellow sun to finish it off. These nails are not my favorite but I do enjoy the bright cheery design and its as good as I am going to get until the real sun comes.

Day 103 - Twitterific

Today's design is really simple but also super adorable. I had painted my nails in this blue polish and while I was waiting for it to dry I was checking my twitter. As I was doing so the idea came to me that the bird would look really cute on a nail and since the base already matched it was going to be today's design.

All I did was paint the symbols and words with my bright blue striping paint making sure they matched the actual logo. Once that was dry I outlined them with a white paint striping paint. This design looks simple but it is always a little tricky when copying well known logos

Day 102 - Legend of Zelda

I have wanted to do this nail design for the longest time and today I decided to give it a try. I love the Legend of Zelda and have spent way too many hours of my life playing the different games. These nails are based on the Ocarina of Time (my favorite game) which came out in 98. It was the first 3D game out of the series and I could not get enough of it. Majority of my grade 8 year was spent playing this game

I started the design by drawing out the basic shapes with a black instant artist paint, this paint goes on matte which worked perfect as I was painting on a black polish that stays shinny. With this contrast I was able to see the lines clearly but they would disappear as soon as the top coat went on the covering up any corrections I had made. After I had adjusted my lines and was happy with the pictures I colored them in and added the details using acrylic craft paint. I am super happy with these nails, it was a bit of a pain trying to line up the sword for the photo but other than that no complaints, I love them!!

Day 101 - Ruffled Feathers

It;s quite bizarre where I get my inspiration sometimes, today's post was inspired by some throw pillows I saw on pinterest. I just loved the print and color combo so much I had to put it on my nails. I attached a picture for you to see...

I like doing prints like this (especially animal prints) where my brush strokes to not have to be completely accurate where in fact the more random the better it just makes the design look more detailed. This one was really easy, if you like it definitely give it a shot. All I did was start at the top of the feather painting the almond like shape with the stem of the feather coming down with a slight curve. After that I took the striping paint and and with outward flicks I just let the brush go where it wanted not caring if the lines overlapped. For more definition I went in with my silver paint and added in some finer lines giving the feather a more ruffled look. To finish it off I added color to the tip of the feather and went over it in a high gloss top coat to make it really pop.

Day 100 - Strawberry Shortcake

I cant believe I have already hit 100 designs, something that seemed so impossible at first is just flying by! Thank you for those of you who continue to check my blog and I always love your wonderful comments!

Todays design is inspired by my niece Alyson, she turned 4 today and just loves Strawberry Shortcake. For the party on sunday I am making her a Strawberry Shortcake cake and cupcakes and so I figured I might as well do nails to match. For the most part I kept them pretty simple, I painted the french to match her hat in a soft pink with the fuschia colored seeds. I then added a green and white stripe to match her leggings, I still felt like it needed a bit more so I painted in the strawberries. On the ring finger was my attempt to paint Strawberry Shortcake herself, the nail was slightly too small to fit everything in but I think it turned out alright. She has a wider face so it was a bit tricky to get the proportions right.

I also must add I am amazed at how far she has come over the years. I loved Strawberry Shortcake as a child but I always new her as the red headed doll with the mom haircut and granny clothes, now she is quite cute!!

Day 99 - Damask Print

After yesterday's wild nails I wanted to go with a print that was on the classier side,  I just love damask prints to me it seems so girlie and elegant I had to give it a shot. I went with this soft blue color because blue is my favorite and I thought it would look super cute with the print.

I started painting the design on my ring finger using a black striping paint (jet black instant artist) painting random swirls and leafy shapes. Once the one nail was done I decided it would definitely be way too busy on all the nails so I continued painting a simpler damask print on one side of the other nails. I love these nails, especially the pointer finger!! I think I would skip the full print next time put other than that these are on my favorites list for sure!

Day 98 - Tribal Print

Today I was totally in the mood for a bold print, after searching through my inspiration folder on my iPhone I came across a picture of some mats with the tribal like print and I knew I had to copy it. I attached the picture below.

The design is done entirely by instant artist paints, all I used for polish was strong adhesion base coat by China Glaze. I painted this design by using the for main colors Grape, Chocolate, Hot Orange and Jet Black. I painted in all the shapes not being overly worried about straight edges and clean lines. Once the basic design was down I went in with Beige striping paint and put in all the dividing lines and corrected anything I was not happy with. I am really happy with how these nails turned out and I would definitely wear this design on my toes too!

Day 97 - Chanel Stitch French

I just got off work and I am so happy I did nail art on my girlfriend today because I am in no mood to paint my own nails. This French is inspired by the stitching on her Chanel purse, All I did for this design is paint diagonal dashed lines crossing each other to match the stitch. For some reason and I do not know why but it really bugs me to paint a colored french and not have something between the smile line and the pink part of the nail. I always have to add glitter or something to break up the line. I know its kinda weird...For these nails I went with a silver glitter which made me feel a lot better! For the flowers I started by painting the petals in black, once dry I went over them in a white paint leaving just an thin outline. I added another black dot at the base of each petal and finished them off with a crystal.

Day 96 - Spring Color Blocking

I've been totally bummed about the weather last couple weeks its just been so cold and wet and I am so ready for spring! So for today's post I decided to do a simple fun design with some spring colors in hopes to bring me out of this funk that I am in. I was in no mood today to go super crazy on the design.

Color blocking is super easy and I think it looks awesome on nails. All you do is choose a color for the base and a selection of contrasting colors, I went with this soft purple from the Electropop collection. Once the base is applied and completely dry you place thin strips of tape onto the nail, I wanted the blocks to all be different so I crisscrossed the tape randomly over each nail. The next step is to paint in the exposed areas of the nail with the previously chosen colors, I went with four instant artist paints in Dark Purple, Hot Blue, Rose and Grape. I am pretty happy with how these turned out, they almost looks like stained glass. The only thing I would change is when I applied the tape I did not make sure that there were no air bubbles in the tape which resulted in lines that are not a crisp as I had hoped.

Day 95 - Dolphin Love

Every now and then I will use my blog for good, I am a huge animal lover and there are a few causes that are dear to my heart. I absolutely love dolphins!!! As a kid I love going to the Vancouver Aquarium to watch the dolphin show, As an adult I am now aware of the horrible things dolphins go through so people can enjoya few minutes of their adorable smiling faces and fancy tricks. First of all I would like to say if you have not watched the documentary The Cove please do!! It will change your life forever! Right now there is the horrible slaughtering of dolphins going on in Taiji Japan, the hunting season is coming to an end with over 700 dolphins killed this year. Ric O'Barry (one of my personal heroes!) is the man behind the movie, he has a great website and I urge you to visit it, lots of great info! I also ask that you sign the petition not to buy a ticket to a dolphin show or swim with dolphins in captivity, here is the link Everytime you you spend money on these activities you are personally funding the dolphin slaughter :(

as for the nail Art... because thats what you came for! I started off by painting a blue french without any concern for clean lines, keeping it lower in certain areas and higher in others. Once I kinda had the basic shape for the waves, I painted in the dolphins and added all the details. For the design, I wanted the dolphins to be jumping out of the ocean and swimming amongst the waves, to represent this I went in with my white and black striping paint and added in the details to the waves to show motion.

Day 94 - Abstract with Flowers

I had my Acrylic molds out again today and just had to play. I have so much stuff I had actually forgotten I had this mold. I was super excited when I found it in my kit, I  really like this specific flower because the petals look like little hearts which I think is really cute!

This design started off with a new polish I picked up this week from China Glaze's Prismatic Collection, these colors are great for spring the polishes have nice small multicolored glitters with a color shifting base. And I'll take any excuse to add a new glitter polish to the collection! I went with a fade because this polish is great for fading as it doesn't paint on as opaque as the previous glitter collections have. After the polish was dry I applied a top coat so the nail art had a smooth surface. I didn't want to have the flowers just floating so I painted an abstract design on the nails using striping paints and a dotting tool,. Once the flowers were secure, I finished off the nails by adding the little pink studs (another item I picked up this week) I have been searching everywhere for silver nail studs and came across these pink ones, they are hard to see in the photo but they are adorable! they are tiny metal circles with a flat top.

Day 93 - the Lorax

After having so much fun painting my Grinch design at Christmas I knew there would be more Dr. Seuss in my future. Of course when I saw the commercial for The Lorax I instantly knew there would have to be some nails done. The colors are just so adorable how could I resist!

I find the problem with doing nails based on animated movies now verses before, is that they are the are so detailed you don't really get crisp lines you would get in the hand drawn days. I wanted to stay away from the book and paint it closer to the movie but I found I had to go in with the black and do some outlining to make the images pop. The trees and Lorax were painted using blended acrylic craft paints. the only nail art paint used was the black. The polish is pretty much turned out non existent as I sponged paint over it to make it look like sky. I must say I am pretty happy with how these turned out, I don't love them like I did the Grinch nails but I definitely like them!

Day 92 - Spring Water Marble

I finally did it!! This is my first successful attempt at water marbling, I have tried numerous times and I have no idea why I am so useless at it. I'm not sure if the temperature of my water is off or I am too slow but I find the polish does not pull properly once I get all my colors down. I follow lots of different nail art blogs and they all do fantastic marbled nails, if any of you are reading this please please let me know if you have any tips or suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated!!

For those of you who have not tried it you are probably better off watching a YouTube tutorial on it. But the general idea is; you start with a selection of two or more nail polish colors, have all the lids twisted off and you drop the polish into the center of a bowl of room temperature water. Each time a polish hits the water it disperses leaving a ring, once you have numerous rings inside of each other like a bulls eye you use a orange wood stick or another tool to drag the colors into a pattern. There is one thing I will warn you!
